The commission: Filtered Space House in Missouri City, Texas

An interior scheme for a house in Missouri City, Texas, one of the studio's United States commissions. The studio's scope here was the interior design, and the two rooms drawn are the family living room and a bedroom.

What the site sets

The drawings answer a house with long glazed walls on one side, so the first decision in every room is what to do with that light. The living room takes it filtered, behind full-height sheers that run the whole of one side; the bedroom takes it against a solid headboard wall, so the bed is not in the glare.

How the rooms answer it

The living room is composed as a single plane: a walnut media wall set into pale stone, open shelves to either side of it, and a long white sideboard running beneath. Nothing stands proud of that wall, so the room reads as depth rather than as furniture.

The bedroom reverses the two materials. A fluted timber headboard wall meets a marble return, a herringbone floor runs beneath, and the bedside joinery is drawn in the same timber as the wall behind it.
