What did the brief for Villa Motion ask for?
The brief runs to 9,500 sq ft of built-up area. Four bedrooms, a family living room, a formal living room, a dining hall, a show kitchen, staff accommodation and a laundry and ironing room.
A white villa of layered volumes, with a perforated stone panel running up the facade, a glazed upper room behind a glass balustrade and a timber pergola over the garden terrace. From the street at dusk the house shows dark vertical fins beside the entrance and a garage cut into its base.
The garden was drawn with the same care as the house, with a pergola lounge, a deck and planting laid out as outdoor rooms rather than left as margin. Every frame is a design visualisation rendered before construction.
The commission: Villa Motion in Dubai
The garden leads this commission. Villa Motion is a four-bedroom house in Dubai with 9,500 sq ft of built-up area, and the scope was architecture and landscape design, with the garden given the same attention as the house: both frames published here are of the exterior, one from the garden and one from the street. Four bedrooms is a short programme for that area: a family living room and a formal living room, a dining hall, a show kitchen, staff accommodation and a laundry and ironing room.

What Dubai sets
Dubai Municipality regulates building work across the emirate, and a pool, a pergola and a boundary fence are permitted works as much as the house is, so a scope of architecture and landscape is drawn as one application rather than as a house with a garden added later. In a managed community the developer's design guidelines reach the boundary: the height and material of the fence to the street, the planting in the verge and what may be seen over the wall, so the street elevation and the fence are drawn to that review together.
The two frames show the house from its garden and from the street. On the garden side a timber pergola shelters a lounge beside the terrace, and a glazed upper room behind a glass balustrade looks over it; on the street side the house sits behind a low white wall with planting along the pavement, the garage cut into its base. The pergola, the terrace and the planting are drawn as rooms in their own right, because outdoor rooms extend the living space where the climate allows it, and a garden with a lounge in it is drawn to be used in the evening as well as by day.
How the house answers it
The house is built of white volumes set against one another, each with its own depth. A panel of perforated stone runs up the facade and lets light through in a pattern, a glazed upper room projects behind a glass balustrade, and dark vertical fins stand beside the entrance on the street side, so the elevations are composed of a few solid materials and deep shadows rather than of ornament. From the street at dusk the garage and the entrance are lit in the white base, and the upper floor is held back behind the fins.
The garden is drawn in as much detail as the house. A timber pergola stands over a lounge beside the terrace, palms and planting run along the boundary, and the lawn and the paving are laid out as part of the plan, which is what a scope of architecture and landscape produces when the two are drawn together.
